Malaysia sink to 146 on Fifa list
ITALY have moved up to second behind Brazil in the Fifa ranking but that was, given their World Cup triumph, to be expected.
What wasn’t expected was Malaysia dropping to 146, a massive 19 rungs from the May list. The ranking list has 196 teams.
Malaysia’s ranking among Asian teams is 29, behind the likes of even Bangladesh (143) and Sri Lanka, who don’t have anything near the structure Malaysian football has.
In South East Asia, Malaysia are ranked fifth behind Singapore (111), Thailand (113), Indonesia (139) and Vietnam (141).
The ranking, FA of Malaysia general secretary Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad admitted, comes as a massive surprise even to the na_tional body who have "got used" to the na_tional team being ranked in the 110-130 bracket for the last few years.
"We were surprised, I admit, but I suppose this is the price we have to pay for the four defeats suffered by the na_tional team this year," said Ibrahim.
The na_tional team, now coached by Norizan Bakar, played New Zealand and Singapore twice each this year. New Zealand beat Malaysia 1-0 and 2-1 when the teams met in February, while the annual two-leg series with Singapore in June saw the team from across the Causeway winning both ties on penalties after the matches ended 0-0.
Furthermore, the na_tional team have been relatively idle the last three years with only the Tiger Cup being a regular tournament for them.
There are also the Asian Cup and World Cup qualifiers but Malaysia’s interest normally ends in the first round.
But with Kuala Lumpur co-hosting the Asian Cup next year thus guaranteeing Malaysia an automatic berth, the na_tional team have been set a target of a minimal quarter-final finish and that won’t be possible if the ranking plummets any further.
"Well, up is the only way we can go given our position now. We understand the need to improve the ranking but for that to happen, the team must win matches."
For starters, FAM will revive the Merdeka Tournament this year, though not on a grand scale as it will be a quadrangular with Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia providing the opposition next month.
The Tiger Cup, to be played in January, will be the team’s next assignment while the Asian Cup, which will be played in four countries, is next July.

GOOD START
25th Sept, 2006 – The Malaysian national Under-23 side started off their tour of the United Arab Emirates on a good note when they beat Al-Nasr 1-0 last night.
The injuries to the likes of Mohd Fadzli Shaari, Ahmad Azlan Ismail, Ronny Harun and S. Subramaniam forced national coach Norizan Bakar to field a highly experimental side against the First Division outfit.
But that did not stop the side skippered by the experienced Norhafiz Zamani Misbah to keep to the tactical discipline which has been decided upon.
And at the Stadium Al-Nasr, Malaysia was also steady at the back to absorb the early pressure from the homesters.
The best chance in the opening quarter came off Mohd Norfarhan Mohamad who celebrated his win of the ‘Favourite Young Player’ award recently with a right foot shot which although beat the keeper from Al-Nasr came off the upright instead.
But there was denying Malaysia in the 21st minute when off a corner from Azlan Ismail, a perfectly executed scissor kick from defender Es Lizuan Zahir Amir gave the visitors the lead.
The several substitutions for young blood after the break did not disrupt the rhythm of the Malaysian game where they continued very much on the same vein as they had done in the first half.
Malaysia had several more chances with a header from Rudie Ramli, a short range effort from Saramsak and a one-to-one off Norshahrul Idlan Talaha but it was all in vain as the score line remained to the end.
Malaysia’s next game will be against the U.A.E Olympic side tomorrow at the Iranian Club in Dubai.

WIN OVER UAE
26th Sept, 2006 – The Malaysian National Under-23 side puts up another solid performance to beat the United Arab Emirates Olympic side 2-1 last night at the Iranian Club in Dubai.
The team which had beaten First Division side Al-Nasr 1-0 in their first game of the tour of the Middle East two days ago was in commanding form at both ends of the pitch to demonstrate a high level of commitment.
The early pressure from the young UAE side was more than ably absorbed by the defence marshalled by skipper Norhafiz Zamani Misbah as well as the excellent work of custodian Mohd Iqbal Suhaimi between the post.
Malaysia then started to get their frontline moving when they had their first look at goal through Azlan Ismail who made full use of a short pass from striker Rudie Ramli to rock the UAE woodwork.
Mohd Hardi Jaafar then joined in the fray a few minutes later when his cross to the waiting Saramsak Kram was met with a crunching tackle by the UAE defence on the latter as the referee pointed to the spot.
And Azlan, who had a superb game in the TM-Malaysia Cup final last week to help Perlis lift their second crown in three years, did not miss to give Malaysia the well-deserved lead in the 32nd minute.
Going in front gave the Malaysian side the confidence to further take control of the game as they won a lot more of the possession.
The break saw UAE utilising the flanks following the several substitutions while for Malaysia, they sat a back a little to allow their opponent to do more of the work.
But while Iqbal stood tall to deny UAE the equaliser, the concession of a penalty in the 67th minute put the pressure on the visiting side as they defended for the major part of the game after that.
Head coach Norizan Bakar then made a few substitutions of his own to give more bite to the fast-tiring forwards and several minutes later; Malaysia gained a second penalty of the match.
But while defender V. Thirumurugan failed to put the ball into the net, midfielder Azi Shahril Azmi was on hand to blast in the rebound for the second goal and the winner.
Malaysia became more potent following the introduction of Norizam Salaman and this resulted in a flurry of red cards and yellow cards being shown to both teams as the game became more and more aggressive.
“Malaysia was a lot more organised and competitive in this second game where they showed progress and better level of understanding,” said Norizan afterwards.
"However, there are still a few weaknesses in the team with the stray passes and the inability of some of the players to concentrate when they were under pressure.”
Malaysia’s next match will be against Bahrain – who will also be playing at the Asian Games along with Malaysia in Doha – on 29th September and 2nd October 2006.

FIRST DEFEAT
30th Sept, 2006 – The Malaysian national Under-23 team fell to their first defeat in their tour of the Middle East when they conceded a 2-3 loss to Bahrain last night at the Bahrain International Stadium.
The team which had won their first two friendlies last week could not maintain their pace where despite taking a 2-1 lead at the break, they fell to two quick Bahraini goals after the break for the final scoreline.
Both teams started the tie on an even note although Bahrain was quicker to settle down when they rocked the Malaysian post with a 22nd minute effort.
That pushed the Malaysian side into action as the midfielders started to thread several moves to pressure the Bahrain defence into making mistakes.
And before long the visitors finally took the lead.
Following a neat one-two between Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Mohd Norfarhan Mohamad, the rebounded shot fell to the waiting Azlan Ismail, who played it to the waiting Rudie Ramli for the first goal in the 26th minute.
And Rudie could not have doubled Malaysia’s lead several minutes later had not his effort came off the upright instead.
But while Malaysia was confident with their lead, Bahrain struck the equaliser off a goal melee despite a gallant effort from rightback V. Thirumurugan to deny them.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Malaysia managed to regain their lead off a superb 25metre drive from Azi Shahril Azmi to allow head coach Norizan Bakar the chance to re-think his plans for the second half.
The restart saw both teams playing a fast passing game although the lapses in concentration at the heart of defence allowed Bahrain to score the second equaliser on 55th minute.
Several substitutions in an effort to give more bite to the Malaysian attack did not work out as plan when the homesters finally took the lead for the first time on the night in the 73rd minute and which turned out to be the winner.
"The first half was great where the combination of players showed that we can play at a high level – but to win we need to score goals and we are not doing enough,” retorted Norizan after the match.
"The objective in the tour of the Middle East has been positive considering the several matches which we have played which are all physical in nature.
“And we have identified the shortcomings of the team where are looking forward to the last friendly game on Monday.”
The last match for the Malaysian national Under-23 will be against the same side on 2nd October at the same venue.

GALLANT FIGHT
3rd Oct, 2006 – The Malaysian national Under-23 side puts up a gallant fight before losing to the Bahrain national team 1-4 last night at the Bahrain International Stadium.
Unlike the previous game when Malaysia conceded a 2-3 loss to the Bahraini Olympic side, this time round Bahrain utilised their full national squad as part of their preparation to play Australia in the Asian Cup 2007 qualifiers on 11th Oct.
Head coach Norizan Bakar said that he is satisfied with the overall achievement of the squad of players under his tutelage in their tour of the Middle East.
"On the whole, we have managed to identify the playing style of the teams from the Middle East and where I believe it will give us a big advantage in preparation for the Asian Games in Doha,” said Norizan.
“The two matches in Bahrain have allowed us to gauge the players’ abilities and how they should control their emotions and mental resilience when they are under pressure.
“So the tour of the Middle East has definitely given us the exposure which we need to better prepare the team for the Asian Games when we face the likes of Oman and China in our group.”
Following from the jittery start, Malaysia was quick to the take control of the midfield where in the 20th minute; they began pressing the Bahrain defence.
Their hardwork against more mature players paid the early dividend when off a long pass from Mohd Norfarhan Mohamad from the left, Fadzli Saari’s header allowed Saramsak Kram the easiest of tap-ins for Malaysia to take the lead in the 36th minute.
But Malaysia had to do a lot of hard defending in the closing stages of the first half to make sure that they at least trooped off into the dressing room on a goal advantage.
The break saw Bahrain making eight substitutions to introduce their first team players and which in turn had a radical change on the pace and rhythm of the game.
Malaysia was served with the equaliser in the 49th minute following a neat one-two while four minutes later, some defensive mistakes allowed Bahrain to chalk in the lead with a long-range effort.
The two quick goals seem to have an adverse effect on the Malaysian lads where their failure to maintain concentration allowed Bahrain to score two further goals in the 73rd and 82nd minute for the final scoreline.
Following from the results last night, the Malaysia U23 side completed their tour of the Middle East with two wins (1-0 over Al-Nasr and 2-1 over UAE Olympic team) and two losses (2-3 against Bahrain U23 and 1-4 against Bahrain national team).

Football: Malaysia plunge to 153
19 Oct 2006
S. Selvam
IF Malaysia’s football world ranking of 146 in July drew a barrage of criticism, including the call by Kalabakan MP Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh for the entire FA of Malaysia (FAM) top brass to resign en bloc, the heat is going to be turned up even more now.
For Malaysia, according to the latest Fifa World Rankings released yesterday, have dropped seven rungs to 153, a spot which they share with Fiji, hardly a footballing nation.
Even the national women’s team, albeit with lesser teams for company in their section, are ranked 79th out of 134 countries. The men’s section comprise 198 nations.
Even Malaysia’s win against South East Asia champions Thailand in last month’s Merdeka Tournament seemed to have done very little to help the country and FAM’s cause to push the national team’s rankings.
Brazil head Fifa’s pecking order with 1,560 points but have world champions Italy hot on their heels just 20 points behind. France are third on 1,483 points. Malaysia have 107.
Previously, Fifa’s rankings took into account the results of the national teams over the past eight years. However, from this year, the world body only takes into account results of the last four years.
Besides that, other factors like importance of match, strength of opponents, regional strength and number of matches played, have also been tested, analysed and, in some cases, totally revised.
In fact, two of the factors thatwere previously used (goals scored and home advantage) will no longer count. The new method came into effect after the Fifa World Cup in Germany this year.
Last July, Ghapur’s call (in Parliament) for the FAM top brass to resign en bloc created a major debate on the direction the country’s football was headed.
And the latest rankings, bearing in mind FAM’s vision to have Malaysia qualify for the 2018 World Cup, are expected to start another frantic discussion on the future of Malaysian football.

19 Oct 2006
