match report from soccernet
Malaysia 1-1 Singapore: Alam Shah strikes again
KUALA LUMPUR, January 23 (Asean Football Championship) - Noh Alam Shah struck yet again as defending champions Singapore held hosts Malaysia to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Asean Football Championship semi-final on Tuesday evening.
The tournament's top scorer took his tally to nine goals in four games with an expertly placed header from Isa Halim's inswinging cross in the 73rd minute which cancelled out Hardi Jaafar's opener for Malaysia 16 minutes earlier.
Singapore will host Malaysia in the second leg at the National Stadium on January 27 but with away goals not counting in the competition, Raddy Avramovic's team will need to win at home to advance to the final, where they would face either Thailand or Vietnam.
Alam Shah's goal came just as the Malaysians were looking like earning a win thanks to Jaafar's strike 12 minutes into the second half.
The shaven-headed winger struck from wide on the left, his left-footed effort swerving in mid-air to bamboozle Lionel Lewis in the Singapore goal and send the 25,000 home fans into raptures at the Shah Alam Stadium.
But Singapore showed the grit and determination that won them the title against Indonesia two years ago, refusing to let their heads drop before pulling level when Alam Shah peeled away from Fauzie Nan and sent his header far beyond Mohamad Syamsuri's grasp.
Malaysia, though, could have snatched the win nine minutes from time when Eddy Helmi - who had caused the Singaporean defence numerous problems with his pace down either flank - burst into the penalty area, only to see his shot blocked by Lewis with his legs.
The match threatened to descend into controversy with two minutes to go when Singapore captain Aide Iskandar received a yellow card for time wasting, the misdemeanour enough to see the defender sent off for his second bookable offence.
The conclusion to the game was in stark contrast to the opening 45 minutes, which - despite several early attempts by the Malaysians - was a cagey affair as both teams sought to feel the other out.
Eddy Helmi did threaten directly from the kick-off, only to see his cross from the right put safely behind for a corner by Isa Halim.
And five minutes later Lewis was called into action when he raced out to the edge of the penalty area to block Nizarudin Yusof before the striker could do any significant damage.
However, it was Singapore who should have gone into the halftime break with the advantage after Indra Sahdan weaved through the Malaysian defence on the edge of the home side's penalty area before slipping a well-weighted ball into the path of Khairul Amri, but his weak shot was pushed away from goal by Syamsuri.
The second half fireworks ensure an intriguing second leg clash when the two teams meet again in four days' time.

Singapore fight back to deny Malaysia a win in Shah Alam
SHAH ALAM: Malaysia failed to capitalise on the home advantage of playing in front of 50,000 fans and settled for a 1-1 draw against defending champions Singapore in the AFF Championship semi-final first-leg match at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.
The Malaysians led through a Mohd Hardy Jaafar stunner in the 56th minute before the Lions drew level through Mohd Noh Alam Shah in the 73rd minute.
The match also saw Singapore losing their skipper, Aide Iskandar Sahak. He was sent off by referee Wan Da Xue of China for a second bookable offence two minutes from time and will have to sit out the return match in Singapore on Saturday.
The Malaysians made a late surge to find the winner, putting the Lions under tremendous pressure but it was all in vain.
The fans, clad in national colours and bearing the Jalur Gemilang, turned up in full force to give their full backing to the team, who are seeking their first international success for Malaysia after 18 long years.
The Malaysian team have also been offered a RM550,000 reward if win the championship but they will go into the return match with no advantage over Singapore.
Both sides started poorly. And there was little excitement for the fans in the first half.
Goalkeeper Syamsuri Mustaffa was only made to stretch once throughout the half, pulling off a great save by palming away a flick from close range by Singapore striker Indra Sahdan Daud in the 41st minute.
The Malaysian forwards, led by Hairuddin Omar and Mohd Nizaruddin Yusop, were rather quiet and barely tested Singapore goalkeeper Lionel Lewis.
Singapore came out charging after the break and threatened to score. But Indra, who was left unmarked inside the box, missed the target with only Syamsuri to beat in the 46th minute.
A moment of brilliance by nippy midfielder Hardy in the 56th minute saw the Malaysian fans go into a frenzy. The Malacca Telekom skipper curled in a gem of a goal to put Malaysia in the lead.
The Malaysians then raised the tempo in their bid to increase the lead but came in for a surprise when they conceded the equaliser to Mohd Noh in the 73rd minute.
In their haste to move forward, the backline was caught off guard and Mohd Noh rose to head a Shi Jia Yi cross past Syamsuri.
Malaysian coach Norizan Bakar credited the players for their gutsy showing but felt that they should not have conceded the late goal.
“A lapse of concentration at the back denied us of a win,” said Norizan. “I have no complaints about their commitment and attitude. I hope they will give the same spirited performance in the return leg.”
Malaysia: Syamsuri Mustaffa, Fauzie Nan, Norhafiz Zamani Misbah, V. Thirumurugan, Kaironissam Sahabuddin, Mohd Hardy Jaafar (Mohd Khyril Muhymeen), Mohd Nizaruddin Yusop (Saramsak Kram), Eddy Helmi Abdul Manan, K. Nanthakumar (Rezal Zambery Yahaya), Hairuddin Omar, Mohd Shukor Adan.
Singapore: Lionel Lewis, Mohd Isa Abdul Halim, Aide Iskandar Sahak, Shia Jia Yi, Mohd Noh Alam Shah, Indra Sahdan Daud, Mohd Hafiz Osman (Mohd Shahril Ishak), Daniel Mark Bennett, Mohd Khairul Amri (Mohd Ridhuan Mohd), Mohd Noh Rahman, Precious Emuejeraye.
