Kelantan and Terengganu likely to book final berths

EXPECT a lot of sentiment, drama and tears as the top four teams try to outwit their opponents in the return leg of the Malaysia Cup semifi nals tomorrow for a spot in the fi nal on Nov 7.

And judging by current form, it could very well be an all East coast affair this time. Kelantan visit Perlis with a 2-0 advantage while Negri Sembilan will try to hold on to their 1-0 lead as they play Terengganu in Kuala Terengganu in the other semifi nal.

As Kelantan will be without Indra Putra Mahayuddin due to suspension, Perlis coach Irfan Bakti believes his lads will have the advantage to turn the tables on their opponents.

“Indra is Kelantan. He was the only player running all over the fi eld (during the fi rst-leg). Kelantan will surely miss his services and we will capitalise on it,” said Irfan. “Kelantan will surely be playing defensively but that will work in our favour.”

Former international Hairuddin Omar, meanwhile, hopes to aid his adopted State, Negri Sembilan, to overcome Terengganu at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium.

Terengganu-born Hairuddin knows that another hot reception awaits him tomorrow but he has got used to the pressure, having left his home State for Pahang in 2004. The 30-year-old Hairuddin is coach Wan Jamak Wan Hassan’s trumpcard although he did not fi nd the net in the fi rst leg.

However, Hairuddin has a Malaysia Cup goal against Terengganu to his credit when he scored the fi rst in the 2-0 win in a preliminary round Group B match.

“Yes. I will be playing against my home State but I cannot let sentiments get the better of me. My loyalty is with my present employers as they pay my wages,” said Hairuddin.

Hairuddin is on loan to Negri after playing for T-Team of Terengganu in the recently-concluded Premier League. T-Team fi nished runnersup to Harimau Muda in the 13-team Premier League to earn promotion to the Super League next season.

“I also want to prove a point to Terengganu that I am still good enough to play competitive football at this level. Not many know it but Terengganu did not want my services for the Malaysia Cup.

“To me it is a big mistake. But as a professional footballer, I have to look elsewhere to earn a living. Negri wanted me and here I am. My loyalty is now with Negri.

“I will do what I am paid to do. It does not matter that I will be up against my home State. I will be more than happy to score and win the match for Negri.

“There won’t be any sentiment when I take the fi eld. It will be a 110 per cent effort from me to help Negri qualify for the fi nal. Negri can count on me,” added Hairuddin.

Incidentally, Hairuddin got a Malaysia Cup winner’s medal with Terengganu in 2001 when he played a key role for the Turtles in their win over Perak in the final under coach Mat Zan Mat Aris.

He also has a FA Cup winner’s medal with Terengganu under coach Yunus Alif in 2000 and a runnersup medal against Kuala Lumpur in 1999.
